CHAPTER 16
-
Reality
Kathy returned with Jobynski to his bungalow office. They read the materials prepared by Kathy's staff. She used her laptop to confirm and glean more information from the internet. Jobynski downloaded results from a professional research firm. Kathy used the printer, Jobynski, his photographic memory. They had three Skype conference calls with 60 Minutes' staff. The interviewer, Steve Croft, also Skyped them. The camera crew was due to arrive that evening. Filming would take place Friday on the Harvard Campus in Jobynski's office.
At 11:30am the telephone rang. "Yeah Ru, what have you got for lunch." Jobynski asked. There was a moment of silence before an unfamiliar male voice asked, "Professor Jobynski?"
"Yes," Jobynski said and looked at the phone.
"What's wrong?" Kathy asked.
"They hung up. How could they get onto this line?"
"A wrong number?" Kathy said.
"He knew my name and this telephone can only be reached through the office phone."
"Possibly Ru or Uncle John put the call though?" Kathy said.
"They never did before." Jobynski scooped up the file folders, her laptop and said, "Take your pocket book and papers."
"We're we going?" Kathy asked.
"Out of here."
Pushed by Jobynski Kathy stumbled out of the cottage. Five steps from the porch Jobynski's head snapped around. He dropped the laptop and leapt on Kathy's back. They hit the ground at the same moment a deafening blast from behind blew their fallen papers across the grass. Jobynski turned Kathy over. "Are you okay?" he shouted.
"My ears are ringing. What happened?".
"Are you alright?" Jobynski demanded.
"I think so." Her voice was weak and she trembled.
"Can you stand up?" he asked.
"I'll try."
Uncle John followed by Ru came running from the office. "Thank God you weren't inside," John said. "Did you leave the gas on?"
"That was no gas explosion," Jobynski said. "Look at the way it's burning. Explosives with an incendiary device. I heard the click."
"What click?" John asked.
"The click a number eight grenade cap makes after the pin is pulled. We used them in Iraq to detonate mines and booby traps."
"Ru was standing by her husband pale as a ghost, in a thin shaking voice Ru asked, "Someone was trying to hurt you?"
"Look at the cottage," John said. "You were lucky!"
The roof collapsed onto the disintegrated walls in a mass of flames.
"It wasn't luck," Jobynski said. "I asked myself the question, 'Should we go to lunch now?' the voice in my head answered, 'Leave immediately and take your papers."
"I called the police," Ru said.
"What about the fire department," Kathy asked.
"Come with me," Ru said. "I'll get you cleaned up."
"I've got to collect these papers," Kathy said. "The four were picking up the scattered notes when police cars pulled up, sirens blaring. Two fire trucks roared onto the motel grounds. John went to show them where the water hydrants were.
Later, in the Motel office, Captain Ted Heidrick of the Cambridge Police Department took a seat at the head of the table with the Ewarts, Kathy and Jobynski. "Professor" he said. "You were right." It was a number eight cap from a grenade that triggered the explosion.
